A group of foreign priests and trainees who are working and studying in Malta recently gathered for a celebration at the Basilica of Christ the King in Paola.

The celebration composed of a mass and an after-party, where priests and students got to share typical food dishes from their home counties.

It was organised by Fr Augustine, a Kenyan priest who is currently serving as a priest at the Paola parish church and studying theology at the University of Malta.

Fr Augustine organised the event to celebrate the ordination of two students as as deacons, and parish priest Fr Marc Andre Camilleri was in attendance.

“There was a great atmosphere,” Fr Camilleri told Lovin Malta.

The Church is facing somewhat of a crisis, with not a single new recruit joining the Seminary this year for the first time in over 40 years. With a shortage of new Maltese priests, the island has witnessed a rise in foreign priests, particularly from Asia and Africa.

Paola’s Basilica organises mass in English every Saturday at 7:30pm, often celebrated by Fr Augustine, and it is open to residents and tourists alike.
