Police constable Simon Schembri, the officer who was the victim of a brutal hit-and-run attack in Luqa that left him fighting for his life and led to an amputation, has received his promised prosthetic replacement.

He has received a bionic hand and an artificial arm from the new centre of orthotics and prosthetics at St Luke’s Hospital, free of charge courtesy of the Maltese government.

In a public Facebook post today, Simon Schembri publicly thanked Prime Minister Joseph Muscat for being there for him and his family during his most “difficult time”.

“In my name and in the name of my family I want to thank the Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Muscat who in the most difficult moments of my life and my family’s life, with great and distinct humility, left his indispensable work and took the time to listen to me and my families concerns and for giving all the help he could give,” he said in a statement.

The Police Force raised over €4,000 and donated it to Simon Schembri’s Blue Light Foundation

During a brief ceremony at the Police Headquarters in Floriana, Police Commissioner Mr Lawrence Cutajar presented Simon Schembri with €2,033 for the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation, a charity for emergency service members who are injured on the job that will be set up in the coming weeks.

Aside from the €2,033 that was raised by police officers from the Cospicua Police station, Rapid Intervention Unit, St Julians Police station, Sliema Police station, Traffic section and Anti-Terrorism Unit, another €2,000 were donated by the Malta Police Force as an organisation.

The funds had originally been collected to support Simon Schembri and any costs he might be facing, but since the government offered to pay for all of Schembri’s medical bills, the money was instead used to set up the Blue Light Foundation as an NGO.

Simon Schembri, his family, and some colleagues, were also invited by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca for a meeting at San Anton Palace
