Joe Xuereb, The Man Behind Brutal Hammer Attack On Mother And Daughter, Has Been Arrested
(UPDATED 8:50AM)
The man behind a brutal hammer attack that left two women with “life-changing injuries” to their face has been arrested in London after a woman followed him with her car following the attack.
27-year-old Joe Xuereb launched the attack in the streets of Greenwich, south east London after coming across the women, aged 64 and 30. He did not know either of them.
Bystanders who witnessed the attack were shocked at what they were seeing.
“It was horrific. Her face was hanging off, I was trying to put her face back together. They were definitely life-changing injuries. “One of the women was choking on her own blood so we sat her up. She was in and out of consciousness,” said one woman who attempted to help the injured women as Xuereb remained on the scene.
He was apprehended by police a few hours after the attack.
Xuereb was seen “calmly” swinging a hammer as his victims were bleeding on the ground
Police were called onto the scene in Adderley Gardens, Greenwich, at around 12.10pm, where they recovered the hammer believed to have been used in the attack. Scotland Yard confirmed the women were suffering injuries “consistent with a violent assault”, and were taken to a south London hospital were they remain in a critical condition.
It is suspected that Xuereb, from Greenwich, may be suffering from mental health issues and police had urged the public not to approach him.
