Nickie Vella De Fremeaux, lawyer and wife of Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia, has admitted she regrets her husband entering politics and throwing her family into the limelight in the process.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, where she also reveals that she turned down an offer to run as an MEP in 2014, Vella De Fremeaux talks about the toll her husband’s political run has had on herself, her relationships with other people, and her children.

“They either love you or hate you,” she said of the public following her husband’s election. “When you go out and people look at you or don’t talk to you, or you say hello and everyone’s silent, everybody looks at you, it’s terrible. And the I feel it, let alone my children. Even if you are on your own and it’s coming from outsiders, when it is coming from within and you know you’ve sacrificed, you’re feeling all this pain for my children…,”

“I mean, I feel pain, but for me, my priority is my children,” she continued. “And you see that we’ve done this to better the situation, to try and save democracy, at the end of the day, Adrian could have just stayed at home and we could have just lived our happy normal lives.”

When asked if that’s what she could wish for in hindsight, she replied in the affirmative

“Given what is happening in the party, I’d say yes,” she says.

She also said she doesn’t know why her husband hasn’t left politics yet.

“I don’t know why the hell he doesn’t, honestly,” she responded. “Because when you are seeking to save democracy, and when you are seeing that your kids are broken… when I see how my children are suffering, I just say, ‘what’s happening you know – why?'”
