Five Years In Office: Robert Abela Defends Labour’s Record As PN Fires Back

Prime Minister Robert Abela marked five years as Labour Party leader and Prime Minister with a rally emphasising the government’s achievements and future goals.

He pledged that the Labour Party will remain a “shield for the young, a voice for the poor, and a source of strength for those who love the country.”

Abela highlighted key successes, including free childcare, reduced utility bills, pension increases, the lowest unemployment rate in Europe and the largest tax reduction in Malta’s history.

He also promised reforms to protect civil servants from unnecessary searches and to address abuses in the justice system.

However, the Nationalist Party criticised the event, accusing Abela of attempting to limit the right to request inquiries to shield the government from scrutiny. PN leader Bernard Grech described Abela’s leadership as a continuation of corruption and scandals that began under his predecessor, Joseph Muscat.

Grech accused the Labour government of prioritising its own interests, citing controversial government contracts and efforts to hinder the Public Accounts Committee’s investigation into the Electrogas project.

He commended the judiciary for exposing corruption and pledged to continue the fight to reveal the truth about scandals like 17 Black.

The PN warned that more revelations about Labour’s failures are forthcoming as pending inquiries conclude.
