Cyrus Engerer has announced that he will be throwing his hat into the Member of European Parliament elections in 2019. The former PN Sliema Councillor turned Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the European Union made his announcement after many supporters, including the Prime Minister, urged him to run for MEP.

“For the last few weeks I’ve been honoured with the zeal from many of you that told me my next step should be contesting the European Parliament elections. That is why I am accepting the call that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat made and with my face forward I can confirm that I shall be throwing my nomination in to be a candidate of the Labour Party for these elections,” he said in a public statement.

He also pointed to the behaviour of Maltese MEPs Roberta Metsola and David Casa as another reason he was determined to run. Saying he had seen the two MEPs attacking Malta for the last five years in the European Parliament, he now wanted to raise his voice in Parliament to defend Malta in the face of these “attacks”.

“I’ve spent the last few years in Brussels attending European Parliament meetings listening to attacks against Malta without being able to say a word myself,” he said.

Cyrus Engerer is well-known for promoting LGBT rights, spearheading the fight for civil rights in Malta.

He was set to compete in the 2014 European Parliament elections, however he pulled out due to a controversial court case he was involved in that led to him being handed a two-year jail term suspended for two years on the 8th of May 2014. Having been found to have sent pornographic images of a former boyfriend to the former boyfriend’s employer in an attempt to damage his credibility.

The MEP elections are expected to be held in 23–26 May, 2019.
