Labour CEO Calls For Free Broadband In Malta: ‘Internet Access Is A Human Right’

Labour CEO Randolph Debattista has said that every household should be fitted with free broadband, arguing that internet access has become a human right.

In a status, Debattista praised UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn for pledging to nationalise broadband and make it free across the UK, noting that his partner Cyrus Engerer had proposed something similar in the run-up to this year’s European Parliament elections.

“Internet access should be a right for all European households if the EU wants to become more relevant among its citizens, fight poverty and take innovation more seriously,” he said.

During his MEP campaign, Engerer had urged the EU to ensure all youths have access to free internet around the bloc, a scheme he estimated would cost €5 billion a year.

“We’re living in the digital era, yet for most young people in Malta and across Europe, access to online information is only available at home or when the signal is strong enough at a Wi-fi hotspot,” Engerer said. “In this modern world, internet access is considered to be a new basic human right – yet young people are often forced to disconnect to preserve the limited access they have.”

“It’s time for the European Union to take action and address this barrier to free information for our youths.”
