Prime Minister Joseph Muscat breaks into tears after the Egrant inquiry clears him of wrongdoing

The Labour Party has said that Adrian Delia has made the Egrant story his own after the Opposition leader decided against trying to force Simon Busuttil out of the Nationalist Party.

“Delia has caved in to the establishment’s demands and, from now on, will also have to answer for the Egrant frame-up,” the PL said. “Delia had repeatedly declared that Busuttil must suspend himself from the PN for having based his election campaign on a lie and that the PN will lose credibility otherwise. After almost a year in charge of the PN, it is clear that Delia doesn’t have the authority to lead the party.”

Delia stripped Busuttil of his good governance portfolio and asked him to suspend himself from the party after a magisterial inquiry ruled there was no grounds to the allegations that the Prime Minister’s wife Michelle Muscat owned the offshore company Egrant. His decision was backed by the PN’s administrative council.

However, Busuttil insisted he was doing his duty as Opposition leader by demanding investigations into serious allegations and accused Delia of being in cahoots with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

The PN’s statute forbids leaders from unilaterally kicking out members from the party, meaning Delia would have needed the consent of both the parliamentary group and the party’s executive committee to force Busuttil out.
However, it became clear in recent days that Delia didn’t have the numbers in either of these two bodies to force Busuttil out of the party.
