Malta Just Lowkey Got Its Youngest Ever Political Party Leader… But He’s Already Quitting

Amidst the decision of Godfrey and Marlene Farrugia to step aside from politics and resign from Partit Demokratiku, the door has been opened for Malta to have its youngest leader of a political party in its history. But there wasn’t much pomp and circumstance about the whole thing, and the political milestone is set to be as shortlived as it was overseen.
Lovin Malta spoke to a source who was once part of PD to confirm the implications that the Farrugias’ decision would have on the party.
Through the procedures in place, when the leader resigns, it then falls down to the deputy leader, provided that the latter doesn’t resign as well.
This means that with the resignation of PD leader Godfrey Farrugia (who was on holiday at the time of the announcement), Timothy Alden is currently the leader of PD.

A message by Hon. Godfrey Farrugia saying that he will be on holiday till October
Alden, who is 28 years old, has not yet made a public statement about the resignations of Godfrey and Marlene Farrugia. He also hasn’t resigned from the party in the past two days, meaning he’s now responsible for the leadership of the party.
Alden was part of the environmental organisation Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar and he joined PD when he agreed to contest the 2017 elections.
Historic (and very lowkey) milestone apart, though, it looks like this achievement is set to be very shortlived.
The resignation of Godfrey Farrugia came at a very unfortunate time for Alden, who’ll actually be leaving Malta for six months to participate in an internship in Poland with Frontex.

Timothy Alden, 28, who through the resignation of Mr. Farrugia is the current leader of PD (and Malta's youngest ever political party leader)
Contacted by Lovin Malta, Alden said that “Tomorrow I have a meeting of the Executive and I intend to discuss it then and there and chart the way forward.”
PD, formed in 2016 when Marlene Farrugia fell out with the Labour Party, was founded with the aim of being an alternative to the two major parties, PN and PL. The PD was also in a pre-electoral coalition with the Nationalist Party called Forza Nazzjonali in the 2017 election.
When the Forza Nazzjonali lost the 2017 election by a landslide, the PN and PD did not have a positive relationship, with some claiming that PD wanted to attack PN after the electoral defeat.
