Owen Bonnici Takes Over Chris Fearne’s Responsibility As Head Of The House Of Representatives
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici has taken over former Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne’s responsibility as head of the House of Representatives, meaning that he will be responsible for setting parliament’s agenda.
This comes as Fearne’s responsibilities continue to be reassigned after his resignation in light of the Vitals magisterial inquiry. He also withdrew his candidacy to be the country’s next European Commissioner.
“As Leader of the Chamber, I feel the duty to ensure that the Parliament is run with a sense of unity and maturity that the people expect from the highest institution of our country,” Bonnici wrote on social media.
“A word of appreciation from the bottom of my heart to the Deputy Leader Mr Chris Fearne for carrying out this responsibility with so much care and efficiency in recent years.”
This role is generally assigned to a deputy prime minister, however, Prime Minister Robert Abela has refrained from officially assigning this title to someone else, and he is not technically required to do so.
According to the Times of Malta, Bonnici will become the acting prime minister when Abela is unable to perform his functions or is absent from Malta.
Do you think that Bonnici is the right person for the job?
