PN Floated Idea For Youths To Spearhead Election Manifesto But It Never Got Off The Ground

If things had worked out differently, the Nationalist Party’s upcoming general election manifesto could well have been drafted by its own youth wing MŻPN.

Lovin Malta is informed that Adrian Delia had floated this idea past MŻPN president Joseph Grech shortly after his election as PN leader in 2017, in an attempt to grant youths a more active role within the party.

Grech stated that, while such an idea had indeed been discussed, it never got off the ground.

“It would have sent a good message in favour of youth activism, but unfortunately it never materialised,” he said. “The leadership said they would discuss the idea further but they never got back to me.”

Grech warned that the PN leadership’s attitude towards the MŻPN in the months following that meeting proved that it didn’t truly trusts its youth activists

“We had come up with three policy papers, on property prices, sexual health and youth unemployment, but they were all ignored,” he said, referring to internal documents that have not been made public. “The leadership never explained to us why it was rejecting our proposals; they merely told us things such as that the topics weren’t on the party agenda and that they didn’t want to shift their current focus.”

“It’s ironic that we were discussing whether to entrust the MŻPN with drafting the election manifesto but that our proposals were all ignored.”

The MŻPN this week called for political responsibility to be shouldered in the wake of the PN’s drubbing at the MEP and local council elections, a call that was mocked by the PN’s media chief Pierre Portelli

“The MŻPN woke up yesterday to say the situation is untenable,” Portelli said.

Grech said it is a pity that people close to Adrian Delia have resorted to attacking their own young members and the parties youth organisation.

“I’m not even disappointed, I’m just sad that we’re being attacked for criticising,” he said.
