European Union Ambassadors have confirmed that the European Parliament elections will take place between the 6th and 9th June 2024 – prompting a statement to be released by the EP President.

“Be part of the biggest democratic exercise in Europe,” said Roberta Metsola.

“The European Union is constantly evolving. The world is changing and we must change with it. We also need reform, and we cannot be afraid of change.”

President Metsola has been named the second most influential MEP – in a review finding that Malta’s MEP’s have more impact on a European level than is to be expected for a delegation of their size.

“The European Union is not perfect. We must welcome it by continuing to listen, continue to explain and obtain the results.”

Metsola has sought to use her influence across a wide range of pro-democratic issues from seeking to incentivise press freedom to meeting with national dignitaries and discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“I encourage everyone to regain the sense of hope and possibilities that the European Union offers.”

Despite the existence of numerous significant shortcomings and hypocrisies inherent to a union of the EU’s scale, Metsola has consistently reinforced her belief that the only way to counter these errors is to participate in the democratic process – rather than allow its slow, error-prone pace to discourage engagement.

According to a Eurobarometer survey, the majority of Malta’s residents would prefer that more decisions were taken at an EU level – as opposed to empowering national actors.

Next year’s MEP elections give us an opportunity to influence that higher level of decision-making.
