Some Common Sense: PL Candidate Cyrus Engerer Supports Actress Branded As Nazi Sympathiser

Former Labour MEP candidate Cyrus Engerer has come out in support of actress Pia Zammit, after she was branded a Nazi sympathiser for having worn a swastika while in character ten years ago.
“Malta’s cultural sector would regress if there are no more actors ready to play roles whose characters go against their real principles,” Engerer said on Facebook, in a clear reference to Zammit.
One of the Labour Party’s youngest politicians, 18-year-old Qormi councillor Martina Grech, also stood up for Zammit, sharing a post by teenage actor and activist Bradley Cachia.
“I’m a person who has a passion for theatre as I used to act myself,” she said. “When you are in character the first priority is to make sure that your interpreting your role well so that the audience can grasp the picture your setting. Although I do not agree politically doesn’t mean some comments are justified.”
On Sunday, newspaper It-Torċa published the comments of an anonymous educator who expressed offence at how Zammit, who is also an Occupy Justice activist, had worn a swastika in a 2009 performance of the comedy ‘Allo ‘Allo.
Zammit has accused It-Torċa of trying to intimidate and censor her in retaliation for her activism with Occupy Justice, a pressure group set up to demand justice for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
PN leader Adrian Delia has also condemned the attack on Zammit, warning that the intimidation and censorship of actors goes against the concept of free expression.
