‘Struggling To Cope With Life’: PN Alarmed At Cost Of Living Increases And Urges Intervention
After Caritas Malta published their report into the ever-increasing cost of living in Malta and Gozo, the PN has called for Robert Abela’s government to take urgent action.
“According to the Caritas report, in Malta, the cost of a standard shopping basket has increased by a staggering amount of almost €1,500 from 2020 for a family of four,” said the PN in a statement.
“This alarming increase shows the urgent need for intervention to ease the burden on families and individuals, who are struggling to cope with life.”
Yesterday, Caritas Malta published the 2023 Minimal Essential Budget For A Decent Living – which unsurprisingly found that across the board, living in Malta is more expensive now than it was a year ago.
To tackle these costs, or at least alleviate some of the burden from consumers, the PN has proposed the establishment of a fund to assist importers and alleviate the high cost of logistics.
“This fund provides the necessary assistance to businesses and consumers, while helping to stabilise prices and improve affordability.”
“This can be done by strengthening the sectors that the Nationalist government had built and created and by creating a new economic model with new sectors that target quality jobs and that pay more to our workers.”
The cost of living has registered as a top concern for young people in Malta, but a national opinion poll last year found that most respondents did not have faith in either of the main political parties to take on this problem.
Maybe there’s something about systems which require “average” people to trust “very wealthy” people with their financial futures, which leads to distrust. Just a thought.
“It is imperative that the government recognises the gravity of the situation and takes immediate and concrete steps to address the increase in the cost of living in Malta.”
“The Nationalist Party is ready to work in collaboration with the government to develop an effective policy that gives relief and ensures a brighter future for all Maltese and Gozitans.”
Should the PL do more to tackle the cost of living crisis?
