Try Not To Breathe: Malta Records Second Largest CO2 Emissions Increase In The Entire EU
Malta has recorded the second largest increase in CO2 emissions in the entire EU, as the country’s constant traffic, over-development and population growth appears to be catching up with itself.
Eurostat figures show a massive 6.7% increase in CO2 emissions between 2017 and 2018, with Malta beating out all the EU nations except Latvia (8.5%). Mediterranean neighbours Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Cyprus all experienced decreases.
CO2 emissions are a significant contributor to global warming and account for around 80% of all EU greenhouse gas emissions.
The Prime Minister and the Labour Party have consistently heralded the admittedly good work done in shutting down the Marsa heavy fuel oil power plant, but maybe it’s about time the environment is properly addressed beyond electoral promises.
Trees, which are also perennially being chopped down in urban centres, actually are proven to alleviate significant pressure rising CO2 levels.
CO2 emissions, which can also have a devastating effect on people’s health, may make lung disease a welcome relief once the islands are burning around us.
