WATCH: Joseph Muscat Hints At Wife Michelle Entering Politics, Mulls Separate 10-Year Project For Himself

Joseph Muscat told One TV last night that there was more chance of his wife Michelle entering politics than a comeback from himself. He also mentioned a 10-year plan he hopes to follow once his resignation has passed.

Speaking alongside her husband, Ms Muscat said that the country deserved a Labour movement before furthering her appeal for Labour supporters to remain loyal to her husband’s successor.

Ms Muscat also claimed that the media was “always” working against them, referencing the current ongoing situation in the country, she continued to brand the times as “confusing” for the Labour party.

“The media does not help,” she said, “it has always worked against us. It always tries to spin things to its advantage. But don’t worry, because people out there know the truth.”

Ms Muscat then added that she feels she can speak more freely now, in light of the current political crisis.

“When [Daphne’s murder] happened, I would tell my husband that justice had to be done,” she went on.

“As a person who has been through a lot, I want justice to be done. I am very proud that Joseph kept working, kept focused and today we have results.”

Ms Muscat also made reference to the history of unsolved crimes that plague Malta, pointing out that “at some point, we will be able to say that the case has been solved” while “other cases remain unsolved”.

The Muscats also said that family planned to return to a “normal life”, and had laid out plans to do so. As Ms Muscat said, “it just came a bit sooner, but I am serene because the truth came out”.

Dr Muscat had said that he will not be positioning himself at the forefront of Malta’s political arena “because the new leader will need space to work”.

This is something, he said, he learnt from Alfred Sant. “You will find me if you want, when you want and how you want.”

When asked what he saw on the horizon for himself, and whether we would ever see a political comeback from Dr Muscat, he said that “one could never say never” but that he thinks he has given all he has to give.

He also mentioned that the likelihood of his wife entering politics was higher than his own return, telling the audience of his 10-year plan:  “I have other projects in life. I’ll try and do something else I hope will be a success for me and my family. But as I said, instead of a captain I will be a sailor and I will be here whenever the captain calls.”

Dr Muscat added that he had planned to resign in the coming months but, obviously, things had changed.

“It’s better that things happened like this, rather than being like other Prime Ministers before me, who said they knew who killed Raymond Caruana and Karin Grech but did nothing. There was a political price to be paid but we made a breakthrough in this case.”

When questioned on what advice he would give to the two Labour leader contenders – Chris Fearne and Robert Abela – Dr Muscat urged the candidates to remain positive and “not fear to change what needs to be changed” even if it means changing his own policies.

“Yes, I would have liked my political career to end on a different note. I cannot say I don’t have regrets, but I did what I had to do.”

Do you agree with Ms Muscat’s accusation against the media? What do you think Joseph Muscat will be doing in 10 years?
