Malta beat San Marino 2-0 away from home this afternoon in its first game of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League campaign.

The two sides went into the break all square, prompting Malta’s manager to make a few halftime offensive changes, bringing on forward Jan Busuttil for midfielder Dunstan Vella and Juan Corbolan for Joseph Mbong.

The changes proved inspired, with Busuttil, who plays for Floriana, scoring a superb opener in the 58th minute in what was his first goal for the national team.

Siena midfielder Matthew Guillaumier then doubled Malta’s lead in the 74th minute with a headed goal following a cross by Corbolan.

Malta are now joint leaders in Group 2 of League D, along with Estonia, who also beat San Marino 2-0 earlier this week.

They now face Estonia at home this Thursday (9th June), aware that a victory will see them become group leaders and give them hope in their ability to win the group and qualify to League C.
