Seydou Doumbia Nets Winner For Ħamrun Spartans In Five-Goal Thriller
Seydou Doumbia scored the winner for Ħamrun Spartans in a five-goal thriller against Balzan FC.
Ħamrun stormed into a 2-0 lead after 23 minutes following goals from Franklin Sasere and Mbong. However, a second-half fightback and some defensive errors allowed Balzan to level the score by the 75th minute.
Doumbia, who has had famous stints with Roma and Newcastle United, came off the bench to fire home the winner in the 84th minute.
The victory means that Ħamrun remains two points clear of Hibernians at the top of the league.
Doumbia signed from the Spartans in January – the latest recruit as part of a team revamp that has seen them shoot up to the top of the standings.
Doumbia, who hails from Ivory Coast, last played for the Swiss top-flight team Sion but was cut from the squad (along with eight teammates) after refusing to take a pay cut in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
At 33-years-old, Doumbia has enjoyed an illustrious career that included stints with the Young Boys and CSKA Moscow, where he was crowned Russian Premier League top scorer twice.
Doumbia is also somewhat of a FIFA 15 legend with an incredible pace at 93 and formidable dribbling at 82.
