Maltese midfielder Teddy Teuma etched his name in  Royal Union Saint-Gilloise history after an incredible performance against Scottish giants Rangers.

Belgian club Royal Union Saint-Gilloise beat Rangers 2-0 last night in the first leg of their third qualifying round match for the Champions League.

Teuma opened the scoring at the 27th-minute mark, taking advantage of some questionable Rangers defending and goalkeeping to put his team in front. It’s the club’s first European goal in 58 years

He then earned his team a penalty in the 71st minute after VAR stopped that his shot struck the arm of Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

This is the first time in Royal Union Saint-Gilloise’s history that the club made it to the qualifying round of the Champions League.

Last season, the club surprised everyone in Belgium’s top tier, finishing second the same season they got promoted to the league, challenging well-known Club Brugge up until the final weeks.

Teuma was a star in the side and was even nominated for the award for the best player in the league.

Royal Union Saint-Gilloise will face Rangers in a second leg next week. The winners of this tie will meet either Monaco or PSV Eindhoven for a spot among the elite.

Will Royal Union Saint-Gilloise make it all the way?
