One person has died on Malta’s roads every two weeks in 2022 official figures show.

By the end of September 2022, 19 people had died in road traffic accidents.

Meanwhile, a parliamentary question from MP Joe Giglio revealed that 235 people have been injured in traffic accidents so far.

The death toll on Malta’s roads in 2022 is dwarfing previous years, with nine deaths recorded in 2021 and 12 deaths recorded in 2020. Lockdown may have played its part but it is already larger than the figure recorded in 2019 (16), 2018 (18) and 2017 (17).

It is still less than the record 23 deaths recorded in 2016. However, this year could eclipse that figure.

The issue sourcing road safety has begun to gather steam once again following a spate of deaths this year with the number of vehicles on the road reaching an all-time high.

Still, little has so far been done to curb the issue.

What can be done to improve road safety?
