Our Power Station Is Good News For The Planet, ElectroGas Insists As Caruana Galizias Launch EU Campaign

ElectroGas has said its power station project will help Malta reach its international climate change targets by fuelling the country with clean energy.

The consortium issued an open letter via an apparent advertorial on Times of Malta yesterday, shortly after Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family ramped up its pressure for the EU not to fund a proposed Malta-Sicily pipeline that will provide the power station with natural gas.

“The ElectroGas project has significantly reduced the environmental impact and moved Malta to a more sustainable and reliable energy supply,” the consortium said.

“That’s good news for the people of Malta and better news for the planet.”

ElectroGas said Malta’s air quality has improved dramatically since the LNG power station started functioning in 2017

“From 2017 until 2020, carbon dioxide emissions from the Delimara 4 plant, compared to older oil-fired generation, have been reduced by approximately 50%, and production of NOx, SOx and particulate matter have been reduced by over 90%.”

It added that the power station will assure Malta has an increased energy capacity and secure supply for years to come, recounting how it had supplied “100% of Malta’s energy needs” when the interconnector was down between December 2019 and March 2020.

“At ElectroGas Malta, our mission is to ensure the people of Malta have access to clean energy through a modern and reliable energy infrastructure. The environmental benefits combined with the stability and predictability of electricity pieces have spurred economic development and increased business confidence in Malta.”

“Malta committed to fight climate change at the recent global summit and set some lofty goals. With our new natural gas infrastructure, significant progress has already been made.”

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family recently wrote a letter to Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša, whose country is currently chairing the EU’s rotating presidency, calling for the removal of a derogation that allows the EU to fund a long-planned gas pipeline between Malta and Sicily.

Describing the project as “corrupt”, they noted that one of its owners, Yorgen Fenech, has been charged with Caruana Galizia’s murder.

“Using the principle of ‘Fraus omnia corrumpit’, it is being called on the Maltese Government to rescind all agreements with Electrogas, hold its shareholders liable for costs, and put the country on a path away from fossil fuels,” they said.

“Until it does so, every time Daphne’s mother turns on a light in Malta, she is funding the person accused of her own daughter’s murder.”
