PN: ‘€40 Million Of Your Taxes Pocketed By Electrogas Instead Of Building A Better Electricity Grid’

The Nationalist Party has slammed the use of citizen’s taxes going towards Electrogas.
During this week’s Public Accounts Committee meeting, where attendees included, among others, the PAC Chairperson Darren Carabott, together with Nationalist Party Deputies Graham Bencini and Mark Anthony Sammut, former Permanent Secretary for Finance Alfred Camilleri confirmed that the payment of Dazju’s share owed by Electrogas was obligated to be made in accordance with the original power station tender, rather than being collected by Enemalta.
“This implies that Robert Abela’s Government favoured Electrogas by forgoing around €40 million in taxes, which instead of being paid from public funds, came from citizens’ pockets,” the PN said.
“While the population endures the anxiety of another year without electricity, Abela and Miriam Dalli chose to direct these funds to Electrogas rather than investing them in infrastructure and the distribution network,” it continued.
“This confirms how this government, which caters to the interests of a small clique, has strayed from prioritising the national interest, the interests of the people, and common good.”
The party went on to say that Finance Minister Clyde Caruana “attempted to twist the truth in response to Parliamentary Question number 7926” – stating in the past April that the payment of the Dazju portion of the lease is being made by the Electrogas consortium, when in reality, it’s the Maltese population that is paying the €40 million, as has been confirmed under oath yet again.
