PN Explains Why It Boycotted Ħadd Għalik: ‘These Are Not Normal Times’

The Nationalist Party has defended its decision to force the cancellation of a Ħadd Għalik programme, warning that Malta is currently passing through extraordinary circumstances.
The Christmas-themed programme, featuring four politicians squaring off against four pants fames, was filmed on 12th November and was supposed to air tonight. However, PBS decided to pull the programme following a complaint by the two PN participants – deputy leader David Agius and MP Toni Bezzina.
“Following discussions with the producer of Ħadd Għalik, we felt that, in light of the extraordinary circumstances our country is currently passing through, the TV programme that was recorded five weeks ago under totally different circumstances, shouldn’t be broadcast,” Agius and Bezzina said.
“Under normal circumstances over the years, PN MPs have always contributed to such programmes but one must understand that these are not normal times and the transmission of this programme was therefore unacceptable from our end.”
“Our decision was not taken with any disrespect to all those who took part in the programme, including our PL MP colleagues.”
The Labour Party said that the PN’s decision to boycott Ħadd Għalik shows that the Opposition has been taken over by “extremists” who seek to sow division, even in the festive period.
“First it boycotted Republic Day and now it has kicked up a storm over a simple programme, all because it wants the people to only receive messages of division and hatred,” the PL said. “It’s wonder the Maltese don’t trust Adrian Delia; they want someone to unite them, not divide them.”
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, who is politically responsible for broadcasting, similarly lambasted the PN for going against the sense of national unity that traditionally reigns around Christmastime.
“The position taken by PN MPs over a simple programme has exposed the Opposition’s true face when it speaks in favour of national unity.
