PN MPs Calls For Greater Police Presence After Second Marsalforn Brawl Leaves Four Hospitalised
PN MP Joe Giglio has called for a greater police presence after another fight led to the hospitalisation of four persons in Marsalforn.
The incident took place just shy of a month after another violent brawl that led to the death of 25-year-old Fawez Najem.
Taking to social media, Giglio appealed for a greater representation of the law in the locality.
“Today we awoke to face more ugly news from Marsalforn,” he wrote. “Another confirmation of how greater police presence is needed in the town.”
He pledged to work towards this end, with the scope of having more security in the area and many others.
Following on from the remark was PN MP, Alex Borg:
“We will continue to be the voice of the Maltese and Gozitans. Safety in Gozo has to be an absolute priority.”
He later addressed the issue on his own social media feed.
Four people were injured after the Marsalforn fight, that took place at around 7.30am in Port Street.
Following police investigations, the fight followed an argument between a 25-year-old Polish woman, a 29-year-old Polish man, and two Syrians, aged 23 and 26 years.
A medical team and ambulances were called to the scene and all four were taken to the Gozo General Hospital. The 23-year-old Syrian was later found to have suffered grievous injuries while the others sustained slight injuries.
With the memory of Fawez Najem’s shocking death on 8th May, following the last fight that broke out in the same area, many persons voiced their agreement with Giglio on social media.
Last month, Najem was stabbed following an argument between two groups of Syrians – who fought with weapons, tables, chairs and knives.
“More policemen are needed in Marsalforn,” said one. “Alone, one man can do absolutely nothing.”
“Marsalforn has become a dangerous territory,” said another. “It’s not even safe to have a coffee there anymore.”
