Police Set To Charge Mother Of New MP Alex Borg Over Safety Failures At Gozitan Courts
Police plan to file charges against the mother of new Nationalist MP Alex Borg on the grounds that she failed to ensure minimum health and safety standards at the Gozo courts, where she works as director-general.
Mary Debono Borg was named by Times of Malta as one of two people, along with Court Services Agency CEO Eunice Maria Grech Fiorini, who are set to face charges over issues at the courts.
She is the mother of Alex Borg, who was one of the PN’s major success stories in the last general election, winning 6,108 first-count votes, more than any other Gozitan candidate save Minister Clint Camilleri.
Borg told Lovin Malta that he doesn’t wish to comment at this stage.
However, the PN has warned that Debono Borg and Grech Fiorini are being made to carry the can for the government’s failure to invest in the Gozitan courts over the last nine years.
“Every general election, the PL pledges to build a new Gozitan court but the political rivalry between Anton Refalo, Justyne Caruana and Clint Camilleri – who all served as ministers in the past nine years – has resulted in the plans being changed repeatedly. There is no indication as to when the project will start,” PN MP Karol Aquilina said.
The PN also told Justice Minister Jonathan Attard to give the order for the Gozo courts to stop being used, seeing as it has proven to be unsafe.
“If he doesn’t do that, he will be confirming that the accusations against the two public officers are unfair and made simply to avoid the shouldering of political responsibility.”
Debono Borg and Grech Fiorini are being charged following an audit into the Gozo court by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), which flagged multiple shortcomings.
The OHSA said the two public officers failed to ensure that health and safety standards are upheld at the court and neglected to carry out a proper health and safety assessment or a proper fire and evacuation plan. Moreover, they didn’t install proper signage at the Gozo courthouse.
