‘Political Persecution’: Gozo Minister Refutes €8 Million Overspend Claims On Aquatic Centre

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri warned that he is the target of “political persecution” after lawyer Jason Azzopardi requested a third magisterial inquiry against him.

Azzopardi asked the courts to investigate allegations that the costs to construct an Olympic-sized swimming pool and aquatic centre in Rabat went some €8 million over budget, warning that it could amount to the embezzlement of public funds.

However, Camilleri warned that Azzopardi was only referring to one tender out of seven issued by the government in relation to the sports projects.

“I have been informed that all the tenders – that incorporate excavation works, mechanical and electoral works, finishes, apertures, adjustable pool flooring system and other equipment – were published on the e-tenders site,” he said.

“I’m also informed that every tender was awarded to the lowest bidder who was technically complaint with the terms and conditions of the call.”

Similarly, he said that claims of misappropriation involving a road project connecting Nadur with Għajnsielem – subject to another magisterial inquiry request – are completely untrue.

“The necessary contracts to ensure the roadworks were done properly and not in a half-baked manner had an allocated budget of €22.3 million. Construction cost €17 million, which means it was actually €5.3 million less than budgeted.”

“This is one of many facts that I will explain when I’m requested to do so. This is political persecution and everyone will have to answer for their actions.”
