Replay Journalist Urges Muscat To Step Down As Malta Premier League Chairman
Leading sports journalist Christian Micallef, who presents the NET TV show Replay, has urged Joseph Muscat to step down as chairperson of the Malta Premier League pending the outcome of criminal charges in connection with the Vitals inquiry.
“I always respected the man and the will of Premier League clubs when they chose Muscat as chairman. I was able to draw a line between politics and football, and I think I showed this clearly in the manner in which I spoke about him within the context of the MPL,” Micallef, a Valletta PN councillor, said.
“Although I completely disagree with him politically, I didn’t and won’t bring politics into Replay. However, as someone who lives and breathes Maltese football, I must speak out now for the good of the game.”
“It could have been anyone else and I’d have said the same thing. In light of recent developments, Muscat must have the decency to resign as MPL chairman until he clears his name. If not, then Premier League clubs must put forward a confidence vote.”
Micallef said he wants Muscat to step down to keep Maltese football separate from politics.
“I know some of you will disagree with me or claim that I am speaking with political intentions but this isn’t the case,” he said.
“Everyone close to Muscat in football, including himself, knows that I always respected him in his role of MPL chairman and that I always did my utmost to not view him as an ex Prime Minister.”
“However, my love for football means I cannot remain silent. The game belongs to everyone and not a single person or group of people. Clean your name and return to football, but in the meantime, be humble enough to take a step back.”
