Civil movement Repubblika has declared that it will not organise any public activity on 28th and 29th May, the days former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and other high-profile people are set to face corruption charges, “so as to promote public peace”.

Repubblika’s honorary president Robert Aquilina confirmed that the NGO won’t organise any kind of counter-protest to the demonstration that has been planned outside court in solidarity with former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

“Joseph Muscat is continuing to rile people up to try to avoid the consequences of the deception he committed when he was Prime Minister. It is evident that this irresponsible behaviour of Muscat creates a great challenge for the police to maintain good order at this delicate moment,” Aquilina wrote on social media.

“We have always worked to maintain good order in our country. We did this during the mass protests of 2019 and we are doing it at this moment as well. Therefore, we have just written to the Police Force to inform them that we do not intend to organise any public activity on the 28th and 29th of May.”

“I appeal to all Maltese and Gozitans of goodwill to let justice take its course and not fall for any provocation.”

In a letter to Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, the organisation wrote that it acknowledges Muscat’s call to his followers to take to the streets on the day he will be brought to court, posing a challenge for the authorities to maintain public order. Therefore, it pledged that it will not aggravate the situation further.

“Despite our strong disapproval of the leadership of the Police Force both under your predecessor Lawrence Cutajar and under you, we have always been proactive in our effort to collaborate with the Police Force in maintaining good order in our country.”
