San Gwann will allocate 40 parking slots for e-scooters in the locality, the first in the country to do so.

In a social media post, Mayor Trevor Fenech announced that the council had identified a number of sites that will not take up any car park spaces or obstruct access on the pavement.

The first 20 parking slots will be finished by next week, while the other 20 will be done shortly after.

“We have always believed in and encouraged the use of alternative transport. E-scooters are part of this alternative. We hope that whoever uses these, does so responsibly and makes use of these parking spaces provided. This is the way to have fewer cars on the road, cleaner air, a better environment and a better future,” he said.

Many have raised concerns over the lack of enforcement and safety when it comes to e-scooters on Malta’s roads with the number of leased scooters reaching record numbers and increasing by 1,500 over the last quarter.

Lovin Malta has reported on the inconvenience that illegally parked scooters can cause to residents, especially when they are left obstructing private entrances or garages.

Upon contacting the European spokesperson for Bolt, it was revealed that the company is currently working on a software update that would ban people from leaving scooters in inadequate locations.

Meanwhile, Transport Malta is reportedly working on regularising e-scooters and providing designated parking bays.
