Swimmers Sickened As ‘Fish Farm Slime’ Carpet Appears Across Pembroke And St George’s Bay
Swimmers have raised the alarm after finding themselves surrounded by slime which they believe is coming from fish farms.
The sludgy surface substance was seen from Pembroke to St George’s Bay in St Julian’s, with multiple people reaching out to Lovin Malta to ask whether authorities would be ensuring swimmers’ safety in the areas anytime soon.
“In Pembroke, we are swimming in the oil from fish farms,” one man from Pembroke told Lovin Malta, showing images takes on Thursday.
“All the people swimming here ended up covered with this sludge… you can only imagine the state of people’s hair.”
One woman in St Julian’s said the slime appeared in St George’s Bay at around 4pm Thursday afternoon – though she says the bloom is becoming a near daily appearance.
“It usually appears around 4pm, but yesterday’s was particularly bad. It’s sickening seeing this carpet of slime,” she said, calling on authorities to stand up and address the mess people are facing.
Previously, fish farm operators have been ordered to clean up leaking excess slime that makes it towards populated areas. Last year, three operators in the south of Malta were ordered to clean up slime originating from their activities.
