‘Thank You For Nothing, Your Honour’: Women For Women Founder Slams Police Officer Rape Ruling

Women for Women foundation founder Francesca Fenech Conti has slammed a recent court ruling concerning an alleged rape case involving two police officers.

This comes after Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera cleared a former police officer of raping his female colleague at the Msida police station after he had confessed to the act of sex. Noting that there were no eyewitnesses to corroborate her claims, the judge said she believes it was more likely that the sex was consensual.

“The judgment by Judge Scerri Herrera of the police officer who got away with raping another police officer is a blow to all women and rape victims,” Fenech Conti said on Tuesday.

“He even had confessed to doing it but his confession was annulled over a technicality by the same judge.”

“A self-confessed rapist is back on our streets – thank you for nothing, your honour,” she said.

“Dear judge, there are never any witnesses in rape cases apart from the victim and the rapist, and no matter how many men she kissed in the police station or any other place is none of your effing business,” she said.

“As long as sex is consensual there is no crime and women can sleep with and kiss as many men as we like – but when we say no it means no.”

“Victims need to be believed, especially if the disgusting perpetrator had already admitted to the rape.”

Speaking with Lovin Malta, Fenech Conti also referred to a previous survey that she had conducted when it comes to rape in Malta, which found that 94% of Maltese rape victims did not report their rapists out of fear of not being believed.

“Unfortunately we women are still not believed – too many people don’t understand that when a woman says no she means NO and at that point, men need to back off and walk away.”
