‘Their House Was In Disarray’: Missing Criminal Suspected To Have Fled Malta With Wife As Jason Azzopardi Blasts Police Commissioner
The family of Marzia Maatouk the wife of a convicted criminal who went missing, have voiced their fears for her safety. Their worries are because of the couple’s home being found in chaos, which indicates a quick escape.
Jomic Calleja Maatouk, who had recently been sentenced to five years in prison for importing explosives, has gone missing. Notably, he failed to sign a bail book for several days, leading authorities to list him as a wanted individual. This wasn’t his first run-in with the law. In 2015, he was nabbed on a Sicilian train bound for mainland Italy due to allegations related to cannabis trafficking.
Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech had previously described him as a “lethal weapon” and someone poised to unleash “the gates of hell upon whoever he considered an inconvenience.”
Marzia’s disappearance, alongside her husband’s, has been the cause of immense distress for her family. With no online activity on WhatsApp since the previous Wednesday and unanswered phone calls which redirect to voicemail.
The situation took a grim turn when Marzia failed to appear for a shift at her brother’s shop. Her worried grandmother filed a police report.
Prominent lawyer and former PN MP took to Facebook last night to express his opinion on the situation… and his frustration with who he called “Malta’s worst ever police commissioner”.
“I’d just like to inform Anglu Gafa, the worst Police Commissioner our country has ever had, that after he let Jomic Calleja escape Malta, the person who was found guilty of wanting to import explosives and poison to kill various people, can be found in Serbia,” Azzopardi alleged. “Along with his Maltese wife. Don’t be too loud with demanding the resignations of him and the Internal Minister. Imagine if this had to have happened in another time.”
When police and civil protection officials searched the couple’s residence on Saturday, they found it empty but for eight dogs and a bird.
Jomic Calleja Maatouk’s criminal past is not limited to explosive imports. Shockingly, in a recent case, evidence emerged detailing his attempt to purchase deadly substances through a darkweb marketplace. These included lethal doses of radioactive material Polonium-210, the highly toxic poison Ricin, the dangerous drug Fentanyl, and C-4 explosives.
Relatives of Marzia Maatouk are desperate for any information on her whereabouts.
