Traffic Casualties Have Increased By 4.4% Compared To This Time Last Year
The number of road traffic casualties has increased by 4.4% while traffic accidents in general have increased by 2.1% when compared to this time last year, the national statistics office has revealed.
Malta’s statistics office has published a report summarising traffic trends on the island and the overall consensus is that traffic accidents have increased from last year’s third quarter.
“Road traffic casualties increased by 4.4% to 449 over the same period in 2021. Grievously injured persons amounted to 116, and consisted of 61 drivers, 17 passengers and 38 pedestrians/cyclists/others. The injuries suffered by one passenger and five pedestrians proved fatal.”
Meanwhile, the northern harbour district registered the most accidents with 1,388 cases or 34.2% of all accidents.
Moreover, males made up the majority of those grievously injured with 71.6%
The largest number of road traffic casualties (53.7%) involved passenger cars, followed by motorcycles (34.3%) and goods-carrying vehicles (5.6%).
This quarter’s six fatalities included four pedestrians being hit by a vehicle, a vehicle crashing into a property killing a passenger and another pedestrian hit by a vehicle in a hit and run.
Cyclists involved in traffic accidents amounted to 13, where seven suffered slight injuries and the other six suffered grievous injuries. Furthermore, road traffic casualties resulting from accidents between vehicles topped the list with them making up 67% of all road traffic casualties.
Road traffic casualties mostly occurred on Saturdays with 71 of these being at least grievous accidents. General accidents, on the other hand, mainly occurred on Fridays with 647 cases or 15.9% of the total accidents.
The most popular time bracket for accidents was between 9am and 11.59am with 22% of accidents happening during that time. The least number of accidents occurring daily took place between 3am and 5.59am with 69 cases.
Birkirkara had the highest incidence of registered traffic accidents, followed by Mosta and San Pawl il-Baħar.
On the other hand, L-Imtarfa, L-Għarb, Ix-Xgħajra and San Lawrenz each registered less than five road traffic accidents.
All districts, besides the South Eastern and Western districts recorded an increase in traffic accidents compared to the third quarter of the previous year.
