Union Shares Footage of Valletta Station Showing Broken Lights, Chipped Walls And Old ACs

The state of police stations in Malta has been the subject of some scrutiny. But the Malta Police Union has raised the issue again through photos taken within Valletta’s police station.

Hailing Valletta as an “open-air museum”, the Union criticised the state of the capital’s police station, highlighting that “even tourists may also require the services of the police”.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta by the Union has shown a concerning state of establishment.

Much like its counterparts in Ħamrun or St Julian’s, the place has taken a rather shabby look. Broken lights, chipped walls in dire need of a paint job, broken furniture, and ancient air conditioning units have become a mainstay in the facility.

“This is not an adequate working space for our police officers,” the Union wrote. “And it surely isn’t a serene environment for victims of crime.”

The Union paid reference to the station’s last maintenance, done in 2018, costing the state around €1,900. They also recalled a 2020 transformational strategy launched by the Malta Police Force that envisaged comprehensive reforms aimed at creating a professional and trusted policing service.

“Two years down the line, and the so-called Malta Police Transformation Strategy is not still not catering for these issues, which are of utmost importance to our demotivated district officers.”

Objective eight of the Malta Police Transformation Strategy – a newly launched five-year strategy for modernising the force– emphasised that police officers’ work environment is not being prioritised enough.

This objective states that:

The quality of the environment and work experience of all personnel are of great importance, and these will be improved through an upgraded and well-maintained working environment. The aim is to enable a positive employee experience thereby supporting a higher quality service being offered to the public. Personnel within the Police organisation will be provided with the right facilities, tools, and support necessary to deliver the best service possible to the community. These improvements are to include maintenance, upgrades to the office furniture, cleaning of workspace, basic commodities for staff, and the required tools.
