Violence, Theft And Bomb Threats: A Look Into Jeremie Camilleri’s Criminal History, Driver Behind Gżira Fatal Crash

Jeremie Camilleri is the suspect currently remanded in police custody after crashing into a restaurant in Gżira and killing a Turkish woman at 1am this morning.

Camilleri, who is a 33-year-old man from Lija, tested positive for drugs following the accident, with sources even saying that he was under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash.

But a cursory look at Camilleri’s criminal history – from being a target of a bomb threat to public violence and multiple counts of theft – reveals a lot more about the man than previously known.

Going back to the start, the St. Martin’s College-educated student who lived with his mother was born in Toulouse, France.

Jumping ahead to 2012 and what seems like his first criminal case, Camilleri was charged with causing voluntary damages of around €900 to the detriment of a woman whose name Lovin Malta will not be revealing for her protection.

With Camilleri pleading guilty to the case, he was condemned to one year in prison, and suspended for one year by Malta’s court. He was also ordered to pay the victim €115.

Speaking with Lovin Malta, sources have informed the newsroom that Camilleri has often been seen acting aggressively with his own mother, who was described as a “very reserved” person.

“He literally used to bully her, while she really used to care and worry about his wellbeing,” one source said.

Sources also confirmed with Lovin Malta that Camilleri was allegedly the target of a bomb, back in November 2022, in his residence in Lija.

And even more recently, Camilleri was charged with various counts of theft on 4th January 2023.

He was charged with committing simple theft on 2nd January from an establishment in Attard, and another establishment on 3rd January in Sliema.

He was also charged with infringing a probation order, after being found guilty of a sentence by a Court of Magistrates in Gozo, back on 25th February 2021.

He pleaded guilty to the charges, and the court gave him “the last opportunity to clean up his act”.

The above case was the reason Camilleri was on probation (valid for three years) at the time of today’s accident.

Arrested on the scene by police officers this morning, investigations are underway to determine the exact dynamics that led to the death of 30-year-old Turkish woman Pelin Kaya.
