Vox Pop: Do Malta’s Students Want To Leave The Island?
A staggering 70% of youths envision their future outside of Malta – so Lovin Malta went down to the University of Malta during this year’s edition of the KSU Freshers’ Week, to put those results to the test, and we asked students:
After you finish studying, do you plan to stay in Malta, or do you want to leave?
A majority of people that participated in the vox pop outright said they want to leave, with some saying they want to do this “as soon as possible”.
“Not at all, I’m leaving the first chance I get,” one student said.
“Absolutely not, I’m definitely out, my friends will be leaving too. Most people I know will also be leaving,” another said.
“Profession-wise, with what I’m going for, there are more opportunities for me outside of Malta than inside of it,” with another saying that “there isn’t much of a future in my field here”.
“I want to leave as fast as I can, because of the state of the island, there’s a government that doesn’t really care about people trying to do stuff with their lives unless they’re sucking up to them,” another said.
“Oh no, I’m leaving, I’m doing my Master’s abroad.”
“I want to leave – I think most people do right? It’s too small, and I’m an artistic person and there just aren’t that many opportunities and artists just don’t get paid here.”
There were still some students that expressed their love and appreciation for the island, with one saying “I want to stay in Malta, but I love Malta and my heart is in Malta”.
“I’m not prepared to leave, I want to go abroad for a bit just to explore and get some new experiences but my roots are here.”
Some even mentioned the increasing amount of traffic that is being experienced on Malta’s roads, with students taking hours just to complete their daily commute to the university.
However, the vast majority of students expressed their wish to leave the country and create a new life abroad, confirming that the recent survey results were quite accurate.
