Watch: Foul-Smelling Drainage Leaks Into Sea At Popular Gozo Diving Site

Article Featured Image

Footage of foul-smelling drainage flowing into the sea on Gozo’s coast has raised concerns about possible raw sewage contamination.

Videos sent to Lovin Malta by a concerned resident show a fast flow of water running down the rocks between Mġarr Harbour and Mġarr ix-Xini, in an inlet called Ras il-Ħobż Ghajnsielem, directly into the sea.

Lovin Malta has reached out to Water Services Corporation to flag the situation and to know whether a solution is being found.

According to the concerned resident, a foul smell can be smelt from just under Fort Chambray all the way to Mgarr Ix-Xini Tower.

This isn’t the first time sewage concerns have been flagged at Ras il-Ħobż, which is a popular scuba diving site.

A concerned diver previously reached out to this newsroom about the odorous drainage, which he warned was ruining the natural site.

At the time, Water Services Corporation confirmed that their deep sewers team was dispatched on-site to deal with the situation.

However, this new footage seems to show the issue has persisted.
