Watch: Jellyfish Invasion Hits Fomm Ir-Riħ As Paddler Tries To Wade Through Safely
There’s probably no quicker way to have a day at the beach ruined than spotting a floating field of jellyfish – but that didn’t stop one paddler attempting to have a day out in the sun.
“Early morning paddle this morning with more than I expected,” @just_an_islander posted today after a visit to Fomm ir-Riħ.

Malta has been experiencing a large number of jellyfish blooms in recent months and over the last few years, with global warming and other shifts in the environment believed to be leading to changes in jellyfish habits.
“Whilst jellyfish blooms have been documented in the Mediterranean since time immemorial, their frequency and intensity have increased in recent decades, leading some to suggest that the Mediterranean is undergoing a ‘fish to jellyfish’ paradigm shift,” marine expert Alan Deidun told Lovin Malta.
With so many jellyfish appearing on the regular in Malta, some say it’s time the island’s chefs and home cooks start putting the invertebrates on the menu as – technically – they are edible.
