Watch: Joseph Muscat Calls Out ‘Suck-Ups’ In Endorsement Of Żabbar Councillor

As he endorsed a Żabbar councillor yesterday, former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he prefers “people who speak their minds” than “suck-ups”.

Muscat described councillor Mark Grech as a “thorn in his side” and praised him for always speaking openly to him.

“He always called me and wrote to me, not to say ‘Well done’ and things like that but to speak his mind. When he thinks something is good, he says so and when he thinks something is wrong, he says so too.”

“I really appreciate people like this – not suck-ups but people who say things they are. It could be that such people suffer sometimes as a result but, speaking for myself, I prefer people who are what they appear to be and Mark is one of them.”

Muscat had hinted that he could run as an MEP candidate in the upcoming European Parliament election but such rumours have cooled down significantly since he appeared at a rally by PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba.

He appeared to play down these rumours further at Grech’s event, when he urged PL supporters not to stay home if certain people don’t run for election.

“Leaders all come and go, and the cemetery is full of people who thought the world would end without them. We aren’t here for the person but the party.”

“Our loyalty should be to the leader and to the party, but it shouldn’t be blind and we shouldn’t just say ‘Yes sir’ and ‘Everything’s good’. There’s always going to be room for improvement and everyone will make mistakes, but ultimately I believe that Maltese families are living much better now than they used to under another government.”
