Watch: Lawrence Gonzi Warns PN Hasn’t Yet Learned How To Be In Opposition After Ten Years
Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has suggested that the root of the Nationalist Party’s woes is that it still hasn’t learned how to be an opposition party.
Interviewed on Il-Podcast ta’ Jon, Gonzi said he doesn’t believe the party has adjusted to life in opposition despite being out of government for the past ten years.
“In my opinion, the problem is that the transition from a political party that spent several years in government to a political party in opposition hasn’t yet taken place completely,” he said.
“As an outside observer, we still haven’t understood what our political function should be when in opposition and we are getting too caught up in internal issues. While I’m not part of these discussions myself, I believe that this is the problem.”
He said that the current PN leader Bernard Grech is doing a “good but challenging” job.
Asked by Jon Mallia to delve further into this phenomenon, Gonzi argued that the PN feels hurt when it views the “erosion” of changes it brought to Malta over the years.
“We would once proudly travel through Europe, but nowadays you’re laughed at when you bring out your passport and it hurts.”
Do you agree with Lawrence Gonzi’s assessment of the PN?
