Watch: Malta Celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee With Beacon-Lighting Ceremony
Malta joined other Commonwealth countries in lighting a beacon to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee, an occasion marking 70 years since she ascended to the throne of the UK.
Organised by Rotary Club Malta, the beacon-lighting ceremony took place last night at the Msida Bastion Historic Garden near the HMS Queen monument, a memorial to 61 British sailors who died of cholera and other causes while they were stationed in Malta between 1849 and 1851.
British High Commissioner to Malta Katherine Ward and her deputy Tristan Gilchrist both attended the event, where donations were also given to Din L-Art Ħelwa to help it restore the monument.

Meanwhile, the Gozo Community Choir celebrated the platinum jubilee by singing A Life Lived With Grace in Munxar as part of an initiative taken by The Commonwealth Resounds, an officially accredited Commonwealth musical organisation.
Munxar Mayor Damien Spiteri and Munxar Parish Priest Father Anton Refalo helped out by supplying the sound system, stage, lighting and seating for the audience.
Queen Elizabeth II, 96, has become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Before she became queen, Elizabeth spent two years in Malta where her husband Philip was stationed as a naval officer.
The monarch has described her time in Malta as one of the happiest times of her life as it was the only time she could live normally.
