Watch: Malta Will Get New Rent Reform To ‘Adjust To Current Times’, Minister Pledges
Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes has promised to spearhead a new reform to Malta’s rent laws to “adjust to current times”.
Lovin Malta stopped Galdes outside Parliament to ask him how he intends to react to a shocking statement by Sliema mayor John Pillow about how rent prices are so high that he “feels like he is living in poverty”.
Galdes initially took a cautionary approach, stating that “it isn’t the role of the state to control or interfere in the market” and highlighting a number of measures the government took to subsidise people facing rent increases.

“The current rent benefit is considerable compared to what it was in the past and we also passed a law that controls certain rent increases on an annual basis,” he said.
However, when asked whether the situation is fine, the minister admitted that it’s “never enough” and pledged to introduce another rent reform to “adjust to the current times”.
Malta has already introduced a number of rent reforms under Galdes’ watch, including one that caps annual rent increases for multi-year contracts at 5% and one intended to address anomalies caused by pre-1995 rent agreements.
However, rent remains high and the rising cost of living hasn’t helped the situation.
Should Malta do more to regulate rent?
