Watch: No More Homework? New PL MP Ramona Attard Proposes Reform
Ramona Attard called for a national homework reform in her first speech as a Labour MP.
“Does it make sense for children to come back from school and spend their time doing homework instead of enjoying their childhood?” she questioned.
As an alternative, Attard proposed that students spend another hour at school doing extra work under the supervision of other students or LSEs and teachers who want to work overtime.
“I know that some teachers of non-core subjects would like to give private lessons but there isn’t a market for their subjects,” she said.

Attard warned that the current system creates an uneven playing field, favouring students with a supportive home environment conducive to studying, while disadvantaging those without one.
“Due to a number of reasons, some students don’t even have a small room at home where they can do their homework in peace,” she warned.
“They will then go to school the next morning in an uncomfortable state of mind because they wouldn’t have done their homework well.”
Attard’s proposal is actually in line with the Labour Party’s 2022 election manifesto, which calls for a national discussion on how homework can be eliminated from the education system.
