Watch: One Month On, Activists Return To Comino To See If Things Got Better Since Major Action
One month after all of Malta watched as activists took to Comino to physically dismantle the epidemic of sun beds and deckchairs that has engulfed the island, Moviment Graffitti returned to see if the situation had improved.
And, of course, it hasn’t.
Sharing footage of their return, they showed deckchairs covering the quay, with rentals jam-packed handle to handle. However, the sandy beach at Blue Lagoon seems to be free from deckchairs.
Activists couldn’t help but note the sheer amount of thrown away pineapple cocktails, covering both the rocky area as well as parts of the sandy beach.
But it wasn’t just Blue Lagoon that caught activists’ eyes.
“While Blue Lagoon has been our main focus so far, it is by no means the only problem area of Comino. A walk along the coast reveals just how strained this little island is now, let alone if government goes ahead with plans to attract even more visitors,” they said.
“Further inland, access to San Niklaw Bay has been completely blocked off by Hili Group.”
“Returning to Blue Lagoon in the afternoon, the need to urgently address the issue of capacity on Comino is even more obvious. Now it’s hard to even move, let alone find a place to put your towel. The many kiosks are now also in full swing, with loud music blaring from each one of them,” they said.
“If this is Robert Abela’s ideal of balance, then this paradise between Malta and Gozo will be destroyed in a few years. Instead of empty words, action needs to be taken now.”
After MG had suddenly appeared on the tiny island one month ago, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo had announced major changes for the island, noting that a team of Malta Tourism Officials happened to be scheduled to go to Comino to enforce laws on the same day as activists took matters into their own hands out of sheer desperation.
Environment Minister Miriam Dalli had mentioned a potential cap on the amount of visitors to the island following the major action – since then, little has been heard of the idea.
Do you think Comino’s situation will ever change?
