Watch: Out Of Juice – PN MP Calls Out Inaction On Electric Car Charging Points
Malta plans to replace 65,000 conventional cars with electric ones by 2030 to reach its EU climate target, but Shadow Transport Minister Mark Anthony Sammut has warned the country is way off the mark.
“To reach that target, we’re going to need the infrastructure for it but the most recent data shows we still only have 372 charging points,” Sammut told Parliament.
“For 65,000 electric cars to be served comfortably, we will need at least 10% that amount of charging points, which means we will need 6,500 charging points in the next six years.”
Although the government officials plans to install 1,200 new charging points by the end of the year, Sammut questioned whether the plan has stalled since it was announced two years ago.
“They have spent years talking about this plan but we haven’t seen a single one of these charging points yet. If we wait another three years for 1,200, will we have to wait 20-30 years for the full 6,500?”
“It is clear that the government doesn’t have a plan, or at least it says one thing but then is far behind when it comes to action. Meanwhile, new petrol stations are still opening, even in a public garden in Gżira.”
“People also tell you that there are more faulty charging points out there than operational ones.”
