Watch: Peppi Azzopardi Brings Out Plastic Doll During Abortion Debate: ‘We’re Talking About This Baby’
Veteran journalist Peppi Azzopardi brought out a foetus doll to drive his point home during the latest debate over Malta’s new abortion bill.
On NET TV’s Opinjoni on Friday, Azzopardi took issue with a statement by ADPD deputy leader Sandra Gauci that women shouldn’t be seen as “Tupperware containers”.
“Shouldn’t I get to decide what to do with my own body, why should I have to wait for someone else to decide for me?” Gauci questioned. “According to ethical pluralism, a person should take decisions on their own body. I’m not a Tupperware container, I’m a person who knows how to reason and how to choose.”
At this point, Azzopardi dug into his bag and whipped out a doll of a nine-month-old foetus, a tactic he has used in the past when discussing abortion.
“So you think a baby is a Tupperware container? No wonder you agree with the amendment. This is what we’re talking about,” he said, as he held the doll up to the cameras.
Gauci was having none of it though, warning that Azzopardi was misinforming the public by giving the impression that the new law will permit very late-stage abortions.
“So long as it’s unborn, you don’t even consider it to be a baby,” Azzopardi stressed in rebuttal.
The debate also featured medical student Michaela Agius, who took on a pro-life stance, and Moviment Graffitti activist Christine Cassar, who adopted a pro-choice position.
