Watch: Plastic Sauce And Sugar Sachets May Be Banned From Maltese Restaurants By 2030
Restaurants have had to get used to a number of EU rules over the years, and a new one is set to be introduced in the coming months.
At an ACE debate moderated by Lovin Malta’s Tim Diacono, ERA unit manager Chris Cousin delved into the implications of proposed EU packaging waste rules, which are set to be adopted in the near future.
“Individual portions of sugar or sauces that are packaged in single-use plastic cannot be used on site at restaurants by 2030,” Cousin said. “They can be served in a bottle instead.”
He added that plates, cups and cutlery made of single-use plastic won’t be usable by 2030 either.
Cousin clarified that this only applies to people who eat out and not takeaways and deliveries.
In another panel, PL deputy leader and MEP Alex Agius Saliba warned that these packaging rules will be a “very big challenge” for catering industries and that the EU must be careful not to over-regulate the industry.
“We must be very vigilant to ensure that we don’t end up putting useless burdens on the industry,” he said.
Do you think these new EU regulations are fair?
