The PN has warned of other dangerous construction sites across the island on the three year anniversary of the death of JeanPaul Sofia.

PN Leader Bernard Grech, MP Stanley Zammit and MP Jerome Caruana Cilia stood on the site where the incident occurred, in front of a pile of rubble leftover from the collapse, pointing out how Sofia’s family have not found retribution or accountability in the wake of the tragedy.

Grech assured that the Nationalists will be applying pressure in parliament by motioning for a public inquiry in order to expose the truth and assign liability.

Sofia, aged 20, tragically lost his life in a construction collapse in December 2022, just minutes after entering the site.

Zammit pointed out several issues, offering a more grounded approach and identifying the key contributors to the problem.

He stated that Abela’s government is failing to consider and consult with experts in the construction industry in order to help mitigate these problems. He also highlighted the dangers of ignoring these potential risks and how these incidents could continue to occur.

Zammit recommended that regulations and policies be revised in order to cater for further safety standards and the current influx of development in Malta and Gozo.

Interestingly he claimed that the authorities in charge of overseeing the construction industry are not being provided the right tools by the Government in order to keep up with the ever growing number of sites.

Grech spoke of the PN’s role in applying pressure for public inquiries at a parliamentary level, mentioning also Miriam Pace’s tragic death three years ago, where a similar construction collapse occurred and accountability is still lacking.
