Watch: Street By Russian Embassy Should Be Renamed Triq Navalny, PN MP Proposes
Shadow Foreign Minister Beppe Fenech Adami has proposed renaming Triq iċ-Ċiefa, a road adjacent to the Russian embassy in San Ġwann, to Triq Alexei Navalny.
Fenech Adami said the Maltese authorities should send a clear message to Russia after the opposition leader and ardent critic of President Vladimir Putin died in a Siberian prison last week.
“Navalny fought for democracy and justice and against impunity, corruption, war and murder, and he was killed because he told the truth,” Fenech Adami told Parliament yesterday.
“At the very least, Parliament should honour this hero by observing a minute’s silence but I am also proposing that the competent authorities and the San Ġwann local council rename Triq iċ-Ċiefa in honour of Navalny.”
He said that this will ensure that present and future generations never forget “the huge sacrifice” Navalny made for Russia and “for liberty and democracy around the world”.
While the government agreed to his request for a minute’s silence, there was no immediate response to his street renaming proposal.
This isn’t the first time a street renaming proposal was discussed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Shortly after the invasion, the Ukrainian government urged countries to rename the streets in which Russian embassies and consulates are situated to ‘Ukraine Street’.
Several countries, including Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Canada, and Bulgaria, complied, but the San Ġwann local council warned renaming a street would be too much of a hassle for its residents.
