From Saving A Dog’s Life To Getting Seduced By Passengers, Welcome To A Maltese Cab Driver’s Life

Driving on Malta’s roads is anything but boring –  and this one Maltese cab driver has some truly exciting stories to share from his days on the job.

Having also shared dashcam footage of the crazy driving he witnesses on Malta’s roads, Jeremy Grixti is now recounting some of the stories that struck him the most.

Grixti started off by expressing that people battling addictions are the ones that scare him the most on the job, as they often attempt to not pay their fare. In one year, this has happened to him twice.

Dealing with shady people

“During my first week, I got a booking to pick up someone from San Ġwann and the ride was booked with multiple stops. This thirty-year-old or so couple stepped in the car, we were still wearing masks at the time so I could not take a good look at the face.”

“The ride was booked with multiple stops but we didn’t even go near any of the stops. I was taking instructions from the guy. I could notice that along the way they were meeting all sorts of dodgy people. That is where I started suspecting that this couple was dealing drugs. At one point he told me that we are going to drop off his girlfriend in Żejtun and take him back to San Ġwann. As soon as we got to Żejtun they both step out of the car and made a run for it.”

“A couple of months after I got a booking to pick up someone outside the Detox Clinic in Gwardamangia and whoever took this guy’s booking at Ecabs made a note to collect the fare beforehand. As soon as he stepped in the car, I advised him of this.

“His reply was: ‘Iva iva, ha nħallsek. Kemm twaqqafni ATM – Yes yes, I will pay you, just drop me off at an ATM.'”

“Immediately, I pointed out that there is the BOV ATM next to us. He paused for a couple of seconds and took out the money to pay the fare. The drop-off was at Marsa stables, I went in those streets pissing in my pants because I know what sort of people frequent that area. As soon as the guy is stepping out of the car and I’m breathing a sigh of relief, the guy tells me to wait for him and he started walking toward two other men that were sitting on a doorstep.”

“I said to myself; ‘Fuck this I’m out!’ and started driving out the narrow street, another car happened to come in the street from the opposite direction almost blocking my way out. Thankfully the split-second decision I took turned out well because I managed to escape without causing any damage to the car.”

Saving a dog’s life

“Once I got a booking to pick up someone from Madliena, as soon as I arrive on the spot I see the mum and her two kids holding a small dog and asked me to drive as fast as possible to the Vet.”

“The dog had accidentally ingested poison and was in a pretty bad shape. I drove as fast as I could wherever the road permitted and was lucky enough not to get stuck in any bottlenecks. The dog’s life was also saved.”

Tests of seduction

“I had another situation where a girl invited me up to her place and even stripped off her shirt in the car to try and entice me.”

“Obviously, I didn’t trust the situation as I felt it was too good to be true.”

Drunken crime encounters

“Driving at odd hours, I’ve seen people sleeping in bus shelters, drunken people sleeping on the pavement.”

“A couple of weeks ago I was waiting for a client at 4am in front of a hotel in Buġibba where I noticed a drunken girl trying to get access into a block of apartments. I think she knew someone there.

“Then she started pulling on the side mirror of a car trying to break it. I called the Qawra Police Station which is only a couple of meters away from the hotel but by the time the RIU arrived, the girl had already left the scene.”

Stay tuned for part two next weekend!
